My Last Friday in Singapore
I returned to Singapore late last Friday night. Too late to do much other than have a small bite to eat and go to bed in hopes of making the most of Saturday. I decided to walk from my place to Clark Quay and have a light dinner at The Coffee Club, a brightly lit chain of cafes around Singapore. The Coffee Club (TCC as it is known) is open late so it is no surprise that I frequent the place for dinner after work when in Singapore. I either go to the one at Clark Quay or the one closer to my apartment on Orchard Road.
I must have been jet lagged when I decided to have dinner at Clark Quay on a Friday night since Clark Quay is one of Singapore's most visited spots for night life. As I got closer to Clark Quay I could see the throngs of people crowded around and a fairly long queue in front of TCC. I decided to venture across the river where the crowds are a little more tame and have a bite to eat at the Wine Garage.
It was too late to order a true dinner so I had a spinach salad and an antipasto platter with humus, olives, salmon, goat cheese, roasted peppers and carpaccio. To help ease it all down I ordered a half carafe of malbec.
The evening was beautiful with a bright moon and a nice breeze that provided relief from what would have otherwise been a hot evening. As I ate and drank I watched the clouds pass before the moon framed between two tall buildings. I watched couples stroll by on there way to clubs across the river. I watched my usual server, Endon, who has an unusually high voice that is perfectly suited to her charismatic personality and megawatt smile as she attended to the other guests. I let the deeply aromatic malbec warm heart and, eventually, ease my mind.
I relaxed for the first time in months.
I wasn't ready to leave Singapore. I decided to take the long way home, walking back along the river past all the restaurants and bars, the revelers and couples, through the lights and the muted music as it pulsed through the doors of the bars and clubs. I stretched out the evening. I lamented the coming of the day. I prepared for my last weekend in Singapore.
